Brighton's 2009 socks

CLUB SOCKS

In answer to more than a few queries, this season all our teams are playing in yellow socks.  These are available from the club's exclusive retailer, Echo Sport, at 411 Hampton Street, Hampton.  A few things to note about the yellow socks:

  • Due to an unexpected number of people buying two pairs, Junior sizes are currently out-of-stock and are not expected in until around mid-May.  At that time, please call Echo Sport on 9598 9933 before turning up there, to find out whether the new stock is in!
  • If your team (especially Under 11s and up) has any players without yellow socks, please consider bringing along your second pair so that the whole team will be the same colour!
  • Don't use bleach in the wash!  This fades the yellow dramatically and they come out a sort of light grey...
  • Don't wear them to training.  Use the old green socks for training.

SSF season starts this weekend

SSF fixtures for U7s, U8s, U9s and U10s commenced on Saturday 2nd May.  Our SSF program for 5 and 6 year olds commences on Sunday 3rd May at 10am.

No training on pitches at Dendy Park

Bayside City Council last week formalised what we have been enforcing since the goalposts went up - which is that the matchday pitches are out-of-bounds for training.  If we do not abide by this, the pitches will not last the season.  There is plenty of open space, and we've even put up a goal at one end of one of last year's pitches, without puting one at the other end. This is the goal with the yellow corners - please use this goal if you wish to work on corners, free kicks, or shooting practice.  Any teams found training on the pitches will be subjected to disciplinary action by the committee.

SMALL-SIDED GAMES (for U10s and younger)

The programs we ran last year for players aged 8 and under have been extended to include under-9s and under-10s in 2009.  Under the new banner of "OPTUS SMALL-SIDED FOOTBALL" (or "SSF"), these nationally-sponsored format is designed to provide an enjoyable participation experience for young people of all abilities with a major focus on skill development through freedom of expression, minimal coaching, and limited emphasis on the scoreboard.

SSF is a modified version of the game designed to meet the needs of players aged 5-12.  The smaller-sized fields with fewer numbers of players per team encourages more touches on the ball and opportunities for more goals to be scored.

SEASON 2009 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

The Q-&-A info below should answer almost every question you might have about Brighton Soccer Club at this time of year.  Please read them rather than emailing or calling us with a question that is probably already answered below or on the FAQ page!  Thanks.

Q: When does the season begin?  A: For most of our teams (U11s and up), season 2009 commenced on the 26th April.  Sub-juniors (U10s and younger) start on the following Saturday (2nd May). Our Men's Firsts & Reserves, and our Boys U18 super-league side have commenced a little earlier, on Sat 28 March.

GENERAL NEWS & INFO
Brighton Masters Win Gold @ 2009 Australian Masters Games
Brighton's Masters team at the Pan Pacific Games

Continuing on from the success of the junior teams, Brighton's Masters claimed the Bronze medal in the 40+ division at the 2008 Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast in November.

Competing against 9 other teams from Australia and overseas, the elder statesmen of our club progressed through the group stages to the semi finals, where they lost 1:0 to the eventual gold medallists, after dominating the game. Played in humid conditions over the course of a week, the tournament was extremely challenging on our ageing stars, both physically and mentally!

This result comes on the back of successfully defending The Wangaratta Masters Cup in September, where the team went through that tournament undefeated and without conceding any goals.

The Masters team has proved that you are never too old to enjoy playing our wonderful game. Just a bit slower!

Working with Children Check

Coaches & managers will be aware from previous correspondence that all are required to complete a Working with Children Check by 30 June 2009.  Click here for the FFV's recently released policy document outlining the obligations for clubs and their members under this mandatory system.  For practical reasons, it is the club's strong preference that all WWC Checks are completed prior to the start of next season.  Copies of the Working with Children Check form can be obtained from post offices.  Please arrange for the "Employer copy" of the assessment notice to be sent to: Brighton Soccer Club, PO Box 398, Brighton 3186.

2008 Post-season update

2008 was the club's most successful season ever, in terms of number of pennants won.  In all we won Five championship pennants and Five Runners-Up pennants, including at least one at every junior age level!

Congratulations to our Champions: U18 Boys, U16A Boys, U13C Boys, U11A Boys, U11A Girls

...and to our teams which finished Runners-up: U16 Girls, U15B Boys, U14A Boys, U12A Boys, U12B Boys

Special mention also to our U13A Girls and U11B Boys who had outstanding seasons and finished third in their respective divisions.

Brighton also captured the Castlefield Shield for the first time.  This is an annual tournament run very successfully by Sandringham JSC, providing an end-of-season tournament for U8, U9 and U10 age levels.  Brighton won both the U8 and U9 age levels on their way to the overall prize.

For the U9s, this win was their 2nd year in a row and this age group has now won their last 6 tournaments spanning over 3 years, without being beaten.  Meanwhile, our U8s survived a 14-team competition and defeated Sandringham 6:1 in the final.  These victories clearly show how successful our U8/U9 Academy programs have been since their inception at the club 3 years ago.
