Brighton Soccer Club was founded in 1924. For the first 30 years our home ground was Hurlingham Park. We relocated briefly to Elsternwick Park in 1954 before moving to our long term home at Dendy Park in East Brighton in 1959.
Brighton have won the Dockerty Cup 5 times (1933, 1937, 1943, 1944, 1952) and have been the runner up 3 times we continue to hold a prestigious top 5 place on the Dockerty Cup honours board.
In 1947, three Brighton players (Don Bingham, Alex Barr and Norm Good) were selected to play for Australia.
In 1958 the club’s first team played in the VSF’s new Premier League. The club was stable throughout the 1960s in the VSF’s Second Division, and celebrated its 50-year ‘Golden Jubilee’ in 1974 before beginning a gradual decline which resulted in relegation to the Fourth Division in 1984 and into the Provisional League in 1986. Around the same time, however, the club’s juniors were progressing well, with a team in the National Youth League, finishing mid-table.
In 1988 due to the Men’s firsts continuing to struggle, a decision was made to merge with Prahran City. This was initially successful and gave the club a foothold back in the Second Division but financial problems resulted in the senior club’s collapse in 1992. An influx of new blood provided a temporary solution but the club was forced to withdraw from competition mid-way through the 1995 season. Despite these problems, the juniors were still doing well and continued under separate management, and were incorporated as Brighton Junior Soccer Club in 1996, with 150 junior players.
Four years later, in 2000, the club had more than doubled in size, with 24 junior teams and 400 players. By 2004 the club had doubled in size again, with more than 800 players (including a huge increase in girls’ participation), and had become Victoria’s largest junior club. The club fielded a Women’s Senior team in 2004, followed by Over-35 Masters in 2005 and a Men’s team in 2006. To recognise the re-establishment of senior teams, the club formally changed its name back to Brighton Soccer Club at its 2005 AGM.
At the 2013 AGM Ruth Kyte became the Clubs first female President. Leading the way in role diversity in Football. This role was not only a first for the Club, Ruth was the first female president of a Club the size of Brighton across Australasia.
In 2017 Bayside City Council opened the new Dendy Park Pavilion providing BSC with female friendly, accessible facilities to accommodate the growing number of young sportspeople and girls in particular. The pavilion, designed by Dale Cohen Architects was funded with support from the State Government Female Friendly Facilities Fund.
BSC is in the unique position of being able to offer players at every age group across Junior boys and Junior Girls access to teams that play at the highest grade available in their age group in Victorian Community Football.
BSC offers programs catering for players from their very first steps to very slow steps!
In 2018 the BSC operations team was established to support game day set up, pack up and Club operations. The team is made up of BSC players and was set up to provide work opportunities as well as support some players to work in return for the Club covering their player registration fees.
BSC has consistently fielded the largest number of girls’ teams in Victoria. From 2018 alignment of pathway and football development opportunities between Junior Boys and Girls was implemented along with equity for playing/ground access for all members of the Club. The Club achieved 50/50 gender equity in player numbers across Junior Girls and Boys in the U15 & U16 age groups in 2019 fielding 4 teams each in FV competitions. In 2020 despite a global pandemic cancelling the season, the Junior Boys and Girls U15 and U16 age group retained 50/50 gender equity. This statistic is significant as research shows massive decreases in participation in team sports particularly for girls in these age groups.
In May 2019 BSC hosted a Referee qualification course in conjunction with the Football Victoria (FV) Referee Department for the local Football Community. 50% of the participants were female. A first for FV referee courses.
In September 2019 the Club appointed their first female General Manager, a position that was replaced by our current Head of Football Operations, Nina Lyon in February 2023, again leading the way in gender diversity in the field.
